In 1809, a group of prominent Newburyport residents formed the Phoenix Marine & Fire Insurance Society, and dedicated The Phoenix Building as its home.
The devastating fire of 1811 reduced the building, along with the remainder of Newburyport's center to ashes. The disaster claimed 250 buildings and 16 acres. One of the first structures to be rebuilt was The Phoenix Building. As the name indicates, the building rose from the ashes, and was rededicated just six months after the fire.
Nearly 200 years later, The Phoenix Building remains a key architectural and historical component of the downtown business district, and continues to flourish as a center for business and social activities.
The Phoenix Room, which graces the entire third floor of the building, has recently experienced a full restoration effort. The 44' x 37' ballroom has been returned to its original Federal style grandeur, with a grand brass chandelier, working original fireplaces, hard wood floors, and thirteen - six foot high multipaned windows, offering fantastic views of the historic city of Newburyport.
The room has an abundance of natural light, high arched ceiling, draped with period décor that provides an elegant historical backdrop for any special occasion.
The Phoenix Room accommodates one hundred and thirty seated guests at round tables, or one hundred fifty guests for conferences or cocktail party settings.
